Mykola Dyletsky. «The Lord is my light»

The concert «The Lord is my light» is based on the initial verses of the 27 th psalm (1–4) in the Moscow version. The poetical text of the Old Testament is structured, as an internal dramatic dialogue of a man, with the unconditional faith in the Almighty God on one pole, and the fear of its trial on the opposite one. Following the text, Dyletsky skilfully builds a system of musical contrasts: repetitive / changing musical material, evenly filled (alto–tenor–bass) / register contrast (descant–bass) choral texture, constant / concert polyphony, etc.

English translation

The Lord is my light
and my salvation;
whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the strength
of my life;
of whom shall I be afraid?
When the wicked,
even mine enemies
and my foes,
came upon me
to eat up my flesh,
they stumbled and fell.
Though an host
should encamp against me,
my heart shall not fear:
though war should rise against me,
in this will I be confident.
One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after;
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life.

Psalm 27:1–4 Scriptural fragments from the King James Bible.

Original text

Psalm 27:1–4
