Mykola Dyletsky. «O Heavenly King»
The concert «O Heavenly King» is based on the text of a prayer to the Holy Spirit, opening next to all divine services (with the exception of the liturgies of the Great Lent, the Passion Week and Easter). The Moscow version of the verbal text prompts the suggestion that Dyletsky wrote this piece in the Tsardom of Muscovy, after his departure from Rzeczpospolita.
Dyletsky uses musical means to interpret a well-known prayer. Imitational sections of the concert, abound with movement, reveal the idea of omnipresence of the Vivifying Spirit (imitation at the words «who art everywhere», canonical sequence – at the words «Giver of life»).
English translation
O Heavenly King,
the Comforter,
the Spirit of truth,
Who art everywhere
and fillest all things;
Treasury of blessings,
and Giver of life,
come and abide in us,
and cleanse us
from every impurity,
and save our souls,
O gracious Lord.
