Mykola Dyletsky. Glory / «Come, o people»

The eight-voice concert of Dyletsky «Glory / Come, o people» is kept at the Manuscript’s Institute of the Volodymyr Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine, in the set of part books from the library of the Kyiv-Pechersk Cave Monastery (43 П/XVIIІ–16, № 11); it was attributed and decoded by Nina Herasymova-Persydska and prepared for publication by Yevgeniya Ignatenko («Partesny Concertos of the 17th - 18th Centuries from the Kyiv Collection»). The piece was written on the basis of a verse by Leo the Despot dedicated to the holiday of the Holy Trinity, presenting the main dogma of faith of the Eastern Christian Church. The idea of trinity of the deity is articulated by triple musical repetitions of the phrases «the Son in the Father, with the Holy Spirit», «which we all worship saying». Dyletsky builds a monumental lyric-dramatic piece on several short melodic phrases.

English translation

Glory to the Father and the Son
and the Holy Spirit,
now and forever
and to the ages of ages. Amen.
Come, o people,
let us worship the Godhead of three persons:
the Son in the Father, with the Holy Spirit;
for the Father timelessly begat
the Son, who is co-eternal and and equal in majesty;
and the Holy Spirit was in the Father,
glorified with the Son;
one might,
one essence,
one Godhead,
which we all worship saying:
Holy God
Holy Mighty,
who created all things through the Son
and with the cooperation of the Holy Spirit.
Holy God
Holy Mighty,
through whom we have known the Father

and the Holy Spirit came into the world;
holy Immortal,
the comforting Spirit,
who proceeds from the Father
and rests in the Son.
O holy Trinity, our Lord,
glory be to thee.
